Better done than perfect
The feeling was there long before the idea started. Around Christmas time 2023 I knew I wanted to start That Woman’s Journey. And now, two years later, I published my first post. Not because I did not want to start earlier, but I wanted it to be perfect. A perfect website, products already available and the whole strategy figured out, even though this is the first time for me starting a blog; in fact this is the first time in years posting something public.
If I am honest, I do regret not having started earlier, but that is okay. There were many other things happening these past two years and I reached other goals, so sometimes the time is just not right. Or is that just an excuse?
What is something you want to start but keep putting off?
For sure you heard that the first step is the hardest and it is true. There might be a lot of feelings stopping you to start. Life feeling too busy, having anxiety, being overwhelmed or being perfectionstic, these and more might be the reason you have not started.
But the whole key is to just start.
Do not expect to be perfect the first time you are doing something. Start small. If you want to learn drawing, practice lines with different brushes, copy simple drawings and lern step by step till you eventually figure out your own style.
Maybe you heard from the 80-20 rule, also known as the Pareto Principle. Applied to time the rule states that with 20% of your time you can achieve 80% of your work and the other 20% will take up the remaining 80% of your time.
I always knew that I struggled with perfectionism, especially the feelings that came with never reaching that state. While working in the corporate world a colleague of mine had a sticker on her laptop stating Better done than perfect. That struck with me and even though I repeated it often and still do, it is a process of learning that 80% is enough. We all have to start with the first 1%.
Being a first-time mom and having a little baby girl I sometimes mourn how I used my free time ineffectively as to now I have to schedule almost every minute to keep up with daily life. Of course, there are also times I can rest but these slots are rare. Despite that, I am extremely grateful I get to learn skills how to manage life with limited free time. It is difficult to accept that not everything is perfect but I will get there. And so will you!
Better done than perfect
No matter what you want to do, do not wait any longer and make the first step.
You will not regret it. Together we can learn that having something done is always better than never finishing it because you have not reached 100% yet. And to be honest, better is always possible. But with time and practice 80% will maybe be your next 89% and if you look back you have reached 95%.
So please, do not be hard on yourself; you can do it!
With love,
Agnes
Reminder for yourself
Of course one option to remind yourself is a sticker like my colleague used, but I like to keep reminders on my phone. If you feel the same, you can find below different reminders.
